Austrian Father Who Imprisoned His Daughter Should Die ...

ok, i'm not usu one for the death penalty (it's use is unfair and biased, etc, etc.) HOWEVER, the man who locked his daughter and their kids in the basement/cellar for 24 years pretty much should die. not a nice, lethal injection "just go to sleep" type of death, but a horrible, lingering, awful, death -- complete with weeping, festering, maggot wriggling sores.

here are the latest and most specific articles that i found:

http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/europe/05/01/austria.inquest/index.html#cnnSTCText

http://edition.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/europe/05/05/austria.incest/index.html

it explains why no one knew where they were. i just assumed that they were in the basement. apparently, they were in a specially made cellar, complete with a labyrinth-like entry maze. apparently, he started building it when he first started molesting his daughter (at age 11) and it is not included in the buildings plans.

you NEVER know what's going on in someone else's house.

Wow, this is an awful story. Thanks for bringing it to everyone's attention. Grrrrr....

Anyway, I don't know where other's might want to go with this but since I think it is undisputed that the imprisonment was an awful, awful thing I won't belabor that point.

I do have thoughts on the death penalty aspect though. I'm against the death penatly for the reasons Savvy Mother said but also because I think it is just wrong to kill another person. I don't think we should suspend that concept because someone does something more horrific than another. Where do you draw the line?

Sure, I would want a person to die if they killed my family but I shouldn't have the right to make that happen. I would be in a biased position and should not have the right or ability to dispense that kind of vengence.

I don't think that two murders or two wrong acts cancel each other I think they add to each other. I think what we put into thw world affects the world.

From a different perspective, I think death is an escape so killing a criminal would be an escape from what they did. Good deal, they don't have to deal with the ramifications of their decision. They escaped. Prison would be a much better punishment.

Okay, so if you believe in hell then you could argue that the sooner we send him to hell the better in terms of his getting his ultimate punishment sooner. Well, my understanding is that hell is eternal and eternity compared to the few years we live on this earth aren't very comparable so why risk our place for eternity or add a horrific act to another horrific act when eternity will get him.

Nope, the death penalty is state sanctioned murder. It is barbaric and I think a stain on our society.

Now putting my piety aside, I do think this guy should suffer badly for his cruelty. How horrible!!

I agree I think he should suffer but not die because then he would get out of what he did. I don't understand how people can be so cruel to each other, especially their own children! That saying Man's inhumanity to man is so true. I also read another article how a woman in German frozen 3 of her infants. Here is the link: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080505/ap_on_re_eu/germany_dead_infants
It really makes me sad how people are cruel to children. I don't understand why some people that have children abuse them and others who can't have children would be good parents.
